Mars is the fourth planet in the Solar System. It has two moons, and a Mars year takes nearly 700 days. It is often referred to as the red planet given its brown-reddish color that arises from its rust and corrosion present in its surface layers. Mars is a rocky planet with no significant atmosphere present. However, ice is covering both its poles resulting in the prominent white-blue looking ice caps. Several rovers have explored the Martian surface over the last several decades to analyze rock samples, search for organic compounds, measure radiation levels and to learn more about the history of Mars.
